Tips for a Mouth-Healthy Halloween

Halloween is an exciting and fun time for kids, but it’s important to keep their health in mind during this holiday. Promoting good oral hygiene at a young age can give them long-term healthy dental habits. If you want your children to enjoy this holiday, but also want them to have a healthy mouth, follow these tips.

Time it Correctly

The best time to eat a sugary snack is after a meal. Saliva production increases during mealtime and this can help cancel out the acids produced by bacteria in your mouth. Also, since your children are already full from their meal, they won’t want to eat as much candy at once.

Space it Out

Make sure you are not keeping their candy in a bowl to continuously snack on all day. The more they snack on sugary snacks, the higher their chances are of getting cavities.

Brush Twice a Day

As difficult as it is to get your children to cooperate, it is still important that you have them brush their teeth twice a day. Brushing away the sugary food from their teeth plays a crucial part in preventing tooth decay.

Be Sure to Floss!

Although brushing their teeth twice a day is important, you still must make sure they floss as well. Flossing reaches the areas in between their teeth that a toothbrush cannot reach. Without flossing, decay-causing bacteria can build up creating plaque and eventually will cause cavities.
